The Java Crystal Reports Designer

This Java report designer allows developers to create, update, and edit reports without leaving their development environment. Crystal Reports report (.rpt) files created with the embedded designer can be published to the enterprise repository.

Note:    Although the embedded designer is embedded into the development environment, it is not limited to the embedded reporting scenario.

A Crystal Reports External Designer

An external designer is a stand-alone application that is available as an upgrade. They are available in standard, professional, and developer editions. You can set your .rpt file association to point to the external designer, so that when they choose to create a new report, the IDE launches the external designer rather than the embedded designer. Crystal Reports report (.rpt) files created with an external designer can be saved directly to the enterprise repository from within this designer.
