Installing an agent on Linux and UNIX

This topic describes how to install the Rational® Build Forge® Agent on Linux® and UNIX® operating systems.

Before you begin

Locate and start the agent installation program that came with your installation package. The file name for the installation program is <os>-bfagent-<version>.exe, where <os> is your operating system, and <version> is your Rational Build Forge Agent version number.

AIX

Procedure

  1. Use the aix5-bfagent-<version>.tar.gz file or aix5np-bfagent-<version>.tar.gz file.
    Note: The aix5np file does not support pluggable authentication module (PAM) authentication.
    Important: If you install the aixnp agent to run as root, at runtime, the agent will use AIX® to authenticate with the server authentication credentials you specified in previous steps. If you do not install the agent to run as root, you must use the magic_login setting in the bfagent.conf file to restrict access to it.
  2. Extract the file by entering this command: gzip -d gzipfilename.gz.
  3. Extract the file by entering this command: tar xvf tarfilname.tar.
  4. Install the agent by entering this command: cd extracted-agent-directory ./install.sh.

What to do next

Important: If you compile an agent for AIX with the configure option -–without-pam, authentication for the agent is turned off. If you install it with the root privilege, people can connect as a valid user, regardless of the password they specify. If you must compile an agent to run on an AIX system that does not use PAM, be sure to use a dedicated account for the agent, install it to run as that user, and use the magic_login setting in the bfagent.conf file to restrict access to it.

HP-UX

Before you begin

Set a PATH value if you have not already. Although HP-UX can run without a PATH value, you might experience some problems when the agent tries to add to the path, but you have not yet set a value for it. You can set the value by editing your system /etc/PATH file, or by using one of the shell standard PATH set or append operations.

Procedure

  1. Get the hpux11-bfagent-<version>.tar.gz file from the installation package. Save it where you want to install the agent.
  2. Unzip the gzip -d gzipfilename.gz file.
  3. Extract the xvf tarfilename.tar file.
  4. Install the agent by entering this command: cd extracted-agent-directory ./install.sh.

Red Hat Linux

Procedure

  1. Get the rh9-bfagent-<version>.rpm (Red Hat Enterprise Linux v. 4) or rhel5-bfagent-<version>.rpm file (Red Hat Enterprise Linux v. 5) from the installation package.
  2. Enter this command: rpm -iUvh rh9-bfagent-<version>.rpm.

Solaris

Procedure

  1. Use the sol9-bfagent-<version>-sparc-opt.gz file on SPARC for Solaris v. 9 or Solaris v. 10.
  2. Unzip the gzip -d solN-bfagent-<version>-platform-opt.gz file.
  3. Enter this command: pkgadd -d ./unzipped-package.

Installing an agent on other platforms and compiling from the source

If you need to run the Rational Build Forge Agent on another platform, use the src-bfagent-<version>.tar.gz file to compile the agent from the source.

Procedure

  1. Extract the .tar file.
  2. Run the configure script in the src directory.
  3. Run the make command in the src directory. The source pack requires the GNU C compiler or the C compiler for your system.

What to do next

Note: The source pack and prebuilt agents that do not include an installer for the local computer come with an installer for the agent in the host computer inetd/xinetd configuration files.
