Installing Rational Rhapsody on a Windows system

Use this procedure to install IBM® Rational® Rhapsody® Developer, IBM Rational Rhapsody Architect for Software, IBM Rational Rhapsody Architect for Systems Engineers, or IBM Rational Rhapsody Designer for Systems Engineers on a Microsoft Windows system.

Before you begin

You must have either administrator privileges for the machine on which you are installing the product or know the credentials for an administrative account to be able to install the product successfully. An administrative account can write to the Program Files directory and the Windows registry. In the latter case, you can enter the credentials for the administrative account during the installation process for the product.

If you are installing Rational Rhapsody on the Windows Vista operating system:
  • You must know the security and redirection principles that are used by the Windows Vista operating system. For example, the Vista operating system has higher security settings for the Program Files directory; therefore, certain installation files might be redirected to other locations on your system during the installation process. If you install Rational Rhapsody in C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\Rhapsody, most of the installation files are installed in that location and its subdirectories, but the writable rhapsody.ini file and sample model files might be installed in a user directory, such as C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\IBM\Rational\Rhapsody. For more information, see the technote in the related links about the default Rational Rhapsody file locations when installed on Windows Vista.
  • To run the installation, you must be logged in as an administrator, not a user with administrator rights. If you are not logged in as an administrator and try to install the product, the Error registering Rhapsody.tlb message is displayed and you cannot begin the installation again until you log in as an administrator.

If you are installing Rational Rhapsody on the Windows 7 operating system:

About this task

This procedure to install the product uses the setup.exe file. If you want to install the product on a Windows system as a background operation or silent installation, use the .msi setup program instead; see the topic on installing Rational Rhapsody silently on a Windows system.

To view a video that shows installing the product, see the topic in the related links about a demonstration of installing Rational Rhapsody.

Procedure

  1. If you have downloaded a compressed file, extract the installation files to a temporary directory.
  2. In the installation directory for Rational Rhapsody, double-click the setup.exe file to start the installation wizard.
  3. For Windows XP system only: If you are not logged on with administrator privileges, the Install Program As Other User window opens. Enter the credentials for an administrative account, and click OK.
  4. Select the language to be used for the product, and click OK.
  5. If the installation wizard determines that the Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) needs to be installed, a window opens to let you do so. Click Install.
  6. The installation wizard guides you through the installation process. Click Next to continue.
Note: If the installation wizard detects a previous version of Rational Rhapsody on your system, a message explains that the previous version is going to be replaced with the current version.
  7. The IBM Software License Agreement page opens. To continue with the installation, you must accept the license agreement. Click Next.
  8. On the Choose Edition page, select the edition of the product you want to install, and click Next.
Note: Rational Rhapsody Developer is required for Eclipse users.
  9. For Rational Rhapsody Developer and Rational Rhapsody Architect for Software only: Select your languages:
    • On the Choose Languages page, select the languages in which you want to generate code (C++, C, Java, Ada, C# [C Sharp]).
Note: The edition of Rational Rhapsody you are installing might not support all these languages.
    • For Rational Rhapsody Developer only: If you want to select the individual OS settings, select the Check for Real Time OS Settings check box. Otherwise, the default environment settings are used.
    • Click Next.
  10. On the Destination Folder page, select the installation folder:
    • Either accept the default destination folder for the installation or browse to select a different path.
    • For Citrix Windows 2008 or Windows 7 users only: Select the check box if you want to install Rational Rhapsody files in one location (the installation directory). Be sure that the installation directory has read/write permission.
Note: If you do not install Rational Rhapsody files in one location (the installation directory), when you integrate Rational Rhapsody and Citrix be sure to review the technote in the related links about Rational Rhapsody 7.6 on Citrix - rhapsody.ini issues.
    • Click Next.
  11. If Java is enabled, select the Java development environment for your computer and set the path to the location for it, and then click Next.
  12. For Rational Rhapsody Developer only: If enabled, select your development environments and set the paths to those environments, and click Next. A mark (such as a check mark or an asterisk [*]) next to a development environment option means that the installation wizard found it on your machine.
  13. Select any of the add-on products listed on the Add-on Installation page if they are available for the edition of Rational Rhapsody you are installing. Some add-on products might already be selected for your edition. Click Next.
Important: Some of these add-on products require separately purchased licenses.
    • Rational Rhapsody Gateway Add On - Requirements Traceability connects Rational Rhapsody to IBM Rational DOORS®, IBM Rational RequisitePro®, and other requirements authoring tools provided by other vendors for requirements traceability throughout the lifetime of a project, and to navigate online between the design and the requirements.
