Importing XMI files into Rational Rhapsody

Use the XMI format to import project details from other software products.

About this task

IBM® Rational® Rhapsody® has the ability to import a model from an XMI file into Rational Rhapsody for either of these reasons:

Important: Normally you would not export and import XMI files between the product users. XMI is intended as a means for vendor-neutral data sharing.

To import an XMI file from another source:

Procedure

  1. Create a Rational Rhapsody project or open an existing Rational Rhapsody project.
  2. Choose Tools > Import XMI into Rhapsody.
  3. In the XMI Operation area, select whether you are importing from XMI, IBM Rational Statemate®, or Rational Tau.
  4. In this window, select the UML Format for the imported file as 1.3 or 2.1.

  5. Select the XMI Version as XMI or RSx.
  6. If you select the UML Format for the imported file as UML 1.3, you can also select whether or not the import operations should Handle Diagrams.
  7. Check Import in new Project to create a temporary project to avoid overwriting your open project.
  8. Select the Language for your imported file as C, C++, Ada, or Java.
  9. In the XMI file field, select the directory from which to import the file.
  10. Click Proceed to import the XMI file as defined and add it to the project.

Results

The system displays messages relating to the import in a window, as shown in Exporting models to XMI.
