Creating a favorites list

You can use the Favorites browser to create a favorites list, which contains the model elements that you are most interested in for a specific model. The Favorites browser is analogous to the favorites functionality of a web browser. You might find the Favorites browser to be most useful for managing large and complex models.

About this task

Your favorites list and the position and visibility of the Favorites browser are saved in the <projectname>.rpw file. When you load multiple projects, the Favorites browser shows the favorites list for the active project.

You cannot use the Favorites browser as a replacement for the main browser in the product. While the Favorites browser resembles the main browser in IBM® Rational® Rhapsody® and has some of its functionality, the Favorites browser has limited functionality. For example, the Favorites browser has no filtering mechanism, and while you can remove items from the Favorites browser, you cannot use it to delete a model element from your model.

To show or hide the Favorites browser, click the Show/Hide Favorites button Show/Hide Favorites button on the Favorites toolbar.

To create your favorites list, highlight a model element in the main browser, the Browse From Here browser (see Opening a more focused browser), or on a diagram and click the Add to Favorites button Add to Favorites button on the Favorites toolbar. You can also right-click the item and select Navigate > Add to Favorites.

With your Favorites browser open, you can add items to it by clicking the Add to Favorites button Add to Favorites button and then selecting one or more items to add from the Select Item(s) to Add to Favorites window. If you have a folder structure for your favorites list, you can specify where to put a new favorite by selecting that folder first (or the root node, Favorites) in the Favorites browser. Otherwise, your favorite item is added to below the non-folder item you have highlighted in the Favorites browser.

Note: You cannot put a model element in your favorites list more than once. In addition, this feature is unavailable for elements inside sequence diagrams and collaboration diagrams that are view-only elements.

Procedure

To create a folder structure for your favorites:

  1. Open the Favorites browser.
  2. Wherever you want to add a folder, click the New Folder button New Folder button or right-click an item on the Favorites browser and select Add New Folder.
  3. Once you have added an item (at any level), you can add a subfolder for that item if you want.

Results

You cannot give a name that is different from the referenced element to a favorite. Note that since you can put different model elements with the same name on your favorites list, to avoid confusion, notice the icon to the left of the model element name. The icons provide you with a clue as to what type of model item you have on your favorites list.
