The topics in this section detail the common configuration
management operations, such as connecting to an archive, checking
out units, and checking in units.
Connecting to an archive
You must connect to the archive only once (there is no
need to reconnect the project). Once the project is connected to the
archive, you are prompted to log in to the configuration management
system when you execute a configuration management operation.
Showing Items in Archive
The Show items in Archive operation lists units that have
been added and checked into the configuration management archive.
You must execute a List Archive operation before checking out a unit
that does not currently exist in your workspace.
Adding units to an archive
You can add a unit into a configuration management archive
only if the unit is not already in it.
Checking out units
In batch mode, the Check Out operation can fetch a unit
from the archive with or without a lock. However, in Microsoft Common Source Code Control (SCC)
mode, the Check Out operation always fetches the unit with a lock.
Checking in units
The Check In operation copies a unit from your working
project into the configuration management archive.
Locking and unlocking units
When you lock a unit, the permission for the unit becomes
read/write for you and read-only for others. When you unlock a unit,
the permission for the unit becomes read-only for all users.
Fetching units
The Fetch operation is an SCC operation that fetches a
unit from the archive without a lock (RO). The alternative is the
SCC Check Out operation, which always fetches a unit with a lock (RW).
The Fetch operation is not available in batch mode.
Reversing a check out operation
The Undo Check Out Options is an SCC operation that reverses
the effect of a Check Out operation, releasing the lock on a unit
(making it RO), and reverting to the file version before the last
Check Out operation. The Undo Check Out operation is not available
in batch mode (except with IBM Rational ClearCase®).
