Client Access Licenses

The number and types of Client Access Licenses are defined by the Jazz Team Server in your edition of Rational Team Concert.

Table 2. Client Access Licenses
Client Access License Description
No Client Access License
  • Read access to all capabilities
Contributor
  • Contributor has read-only access to all capabilities
  • Contributor can create and modify work items unless otherwise restricted by process permissions
  • Contributors can create and modify plans
  • Contributor can create and save work item queries
  • Contributor can create and modify dashboards
  • Contributor can customize the work item and planning parts of process
  • Contributor can view reports created by other users, but cannot create or modify reports
  • Contributor Client Access Licenses do not add to the server user limit. You can add Contributor Client Access Licenses even if the server user limit has been reached.
Developer
  • Developer has read access to all capabilities
  • Developer has write access to all capabilities, unless otherwise restricted by process permissions
  • The total number of all users with Developer Client Access License cannot exceed the server user limit.
Note: Floating Developer CALs count against the server user limit only when a user action occurs that requires the license key. Unlike permanent Contributor CALs, floating Developer CALs are not counted when they are assigned.
Build System
  • The Build System Client Access License is for assignment only to a user ID used by a Build System. This enables the devices in the Build System to have read access to all capabilities, and write access to all capabilities unless otherwise restricted by process permissions.
  • Build System user IDs do not add to the server user limit.
ClearCase Connector
  • Standard and Enterprise editions only
  • The ClearCase Connector Client Access License is for assignment only to the synchronization process account (the account used by a build engine that creates and synchronizes a ClearCase Synchronized Stream). For more information, see ../../com.ibm.team.connector.scm.cc.doc/topics/t_sync_builder_ccsync.html. The capabilities are restricted to only those needed by the ClearCase Connector.
  • These user IDs do not add to the server user limit.
ClearQuest Connector
  • Standard and Enterprise editions only
  • The ClearQuest Connector Client Access License is for assignment only to the single user ID being used by the ClearQuest Connector. The capabilities are restricted to only those capabilities needed by the ClearQuest Connector.
  • These user IDs do not add to the server user limit.

Floating Client Access Licenses

A floating Client Access License (CAL) enables multiple users to share the same CAL. For example, if two users only occasionally use the Jazz Team Server, such as once or twice a day to update work items, then those users can share a floating CAL instead of purchasing two separate permanent CALs. A single server can administer and monitor CAL purchase counts and usage, and distribute CALs to more than one Jazz Team Server.

A user who is assigned a floating CAL can only use the supported CAL functions if there is an available copy of a CAL. For example, if a server administrator purchases three floating Contributor CALs and assigns them to five users, then only three users can use the CALs at the same time. CAL usage starts when a user performs their first server operation that requires the CAL. A user holds the CAL until 2 hours after their last server operation. If a user acquires a CAL at 9 AM and edits work items until 9:24 AM, then the user holds the CAL until 11:24 AM.

You can simplify floating CAL usage administration and tracking by using a single server to distribute all floating CALs in a multiple Jazz Team Server environment. Select a server that can hold the floating CALs, such as an existing server that runs as a Jazz Team Server and floating CAL server. After installing floating CALs on a server, you can use the Admin Web UI to configure other servers to point to the floating CAL server, then those servers can assign and use the floating CALs.

Note: The floating license server supports only http connections, and not https (secure connections).

To determine whether to install a new server to only manage floating CALs or to re-use an existing Jazz Team Server as a CAL server, consider the following:

1 Derby user limit: When using a Derby database to store the repository, there is a 10-user limit. This limit applies to all editions, including Express, Standard, and Enterprise editions.
2 Limited dashboard support in Express-C and Express editions: In the Express-C and Express editions, each project area includes a single project dashboard with a single dashboard tab. Dashboards are not available for individual users or teams.
