Lesson 7: The Web user interface

In addition to high quality integration of Rational Team Concert™ into an Eclipse IDE client, Rational Team Concert also allows you to directly access a Rational Team Concert server through a web browser. This is known as the Rational Team Concert Web UI. The Rational Team Concert Web UI is better suited for casual or occasional users than the IDE because it does not require installation of an Eclipse Jazz™ client; all that's needed is a Web browser.
In this section you will learn:

Connecting to the repository from a Web browser

You can use a web browser to access a Rational Team Concert repository.
To access a Rational Team Concert repository through a Web browser:
  1. Open your Web browser and go to the URL for your Jazz Team Server Web interface. The URL is similar to the following:https://localhost:9443/jazz/web
  2. Log in as the user Chris (user ID: chris; password: chris) whom you created in a previous lesson and click Prelude from the list of projects.
You can now browse the Prelude project area using the various pages of the Web UI.

Finding work items

You can use the Web UI to find work items
The first area you can explore is the Work Items page. As in Rational Team Concerton Eclipse, you can query work items from the Web UI.

To define a query that finds work items that are assigned to Chris and are resolved:

  1. Click the Work Items tab.
  2. On the left side of the page, click Create Query. The Work Item Query editor opens.
  3. In the Work Item Query editor, to add a condition for the query, click the Add condition icon
    Add Condition button
    .
  4. Select the Status attribute; then click Add attribute condition.
  5. For the second condition, select the attribute Owned by; then click Add attribute condition.
  6. In the Status condition box, select Resolved check box.
  7. In the Owned by condition box, select the user Chris. Your query should look like the following:

    Work Item query dialog

  8. In the Name field, type Resolved by Chris.
  9. Click Run. The results of the query display below the query editor.

Browsing work items

You can use the Web UI to view work item details:
To view work item details:
  1. From the results of the previous query, click the work item title Share code with Jazz Source Control. The work item opens in the work item editor. On the Overview section, notice the Details, Description, and Discussion sections.
  2. In the Work item editor, to view the team artifacts that are associated with this work item, click the Links tab. You can view that Chris delivered a change set that he associated with this work item.

Plans perspective

The Plans section displays the current project area's plans.
To view the project area plan:
  1. From the main menu, click the Plans tab. Because we have only defined one plan, the Web UI immediately displays the overview page of the Prelude plan for Sprint 1 (1.0).
  2. To display the work items planned for this iteration, click Planned Items. To view the work breakdown for each team member, in the View As field, select Work Breakdown.

Source Control perspective

The Source Control perspective provides a read-only access to files stored in the Rational Team Concert repository.
  1. From the main menu, click the Source Control tab.
  2. On the left side of the page, to view the components that are in this stream, click Team 1 Stream.
  3. To view the files and folders contained in the component, click Default Component. You can then browse folders and sub-folders to view a particular file.
  4. While viewing a file or folder, to view the file history, click History.

Web UI Dashboard perspective

The Dashboard lets you define and organize your project dashboards with a layout of dynamic viewlets that display different facets of the project area.
Note: The Dashboard is only available in Rational Team Concert Standard edition.

To navigate through the Dashboard:

  1. From the main menu, click the Dashboards tab. A default dashboard for the Prelude project area displays.

  2. To create a new dashboard for Chris, click the Create Dashboard button.
  3. To open the Viewlet Chooser, in the top right corner of the dashboard, click the Add Viewlet link.
  4. In the list of viewlets, select the Work Item Changes viewlet.

Creating a new Event Log viewlet

  5. Click the Add viewlet button. The Work Item Changes viewlet is now added to Chris' dashboard.
  6. Click the Close button of the Viewlet Chooser.
You just created a personal dashboard for Chris and customized it with an event log.

Some types of viewlets show current status, with queries and feeds, while other types of viewlets report on historical, aggregated data. This historical type of data is useful only when the data warehouse contains enough snapshots to paint a clear picture of progress over time.
