Creating a plan

You can create different types of plans for a project; such as a Project Release plan, Team Release plan, and Iteration plan . For more information about these plans, see the topics on each plan.
Before you begin
Before creating a plan, you must create a project area with at least one timeline, iteration, and a team area associated with a work item category. Also, you must have permission to save a plan. For more information about permission, see Modifying permissions topic.
Note: If you follow the Scrum process template, a Project Release plan is called a Product Backlog plan, a Team Release plan is called a Team Backlog plan, and an Iteration plan is called a Sprint Backlog plan.
About this task
You can create a plan for either a project area or a team area. Generally, you create a plan for a project area if you have a small team.
Note: If you do not associate a team area with a work item category because you have not created any team areas, the project area is associated with the work item category.

To create a plan:

  1. In the Team Artifacts view, expand a project area and the Plans folder. Current iterations are shown at the top level in the Plans folder. Past and future iterations are grouped in the timeline folders.
  2. Right-click an iteration folder and click New > Plan.
  3. In the New Plan window, type a name for the plan, and select a plan type.
  4. Do one of the following actions:
    • To create a plan for project area, click Project Area.
    • To create a plan for team area, click Team Area.
  5. If the plan is for project area, select a timeline and an iteration. If the plan is for team area, select a team area and an iteration.
  6. Click Finish.
