UPIA capabilities

The UPIA modeling feature provides tools, which are available on palettes and menus, that are divided by function into multiple capabilities. Each UPIA capability corresponds with an aspect of the architecture model.

When you create a UPIA model, all the individual UPIA modeling capabilities are enabled in the model by default. Each UPIA capability defines a subset of the UML elements and relationships in UPIA that you might use to define an architecture model. You can control the visibility of the UI elements that relate to capabilities by using the Viewpoints button.

You might want to use additional UML elements that are not defined in the UPIA capabilities and that are not visible in the UI. The UI elements that are visible are determined by both the capabilities that are enabled in the model and the capabilities that are enabled in the current model viewpoint. Therefore, you must first enable the capability in the model for a new UI element to become visible.

In addition to the main UPIA modeling capability, which enables the feature, you can enable or disable individual capabilities in the following table:

Capability Description
UPIA Enterprise Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create elements that describe the enterprise and its vision. The available elements include Architecture Description, Enterprise, Goal, Policy, Viewpoint, and Vision.
UPIA Measurement Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create measurement elements, such as performance criteria, that can be associated with any UPIA element.
UPIA Operational Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create operational elements that define an abstract representation of the architecture. The available elements include Operational Activities, Operational Capabilities, Operational Nodes, and Operational Tasks.
UPIA Organizational Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create organizational elements which include Competence, Concern, Resource, Organizational Resource, Operational Capability Role, and Stakeholder.
UPIA Project Planning This capability provides tools that you can use to create elements for planning the implementation and delivery of the architecture. The available elements include Milestone, Project, Project Type, and Forecast.
UPIA Service Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create elements for modeling the basics of a service-oriented architecture. The available elements include Service Specification, Service, Service Consumer, and Service Provider.
UPIA Standards Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create elements that represent functional standards, technical standards, and standards profiles, which you can associate with elements in the model.
UPIA Strategic Planning This capability provides tools that you can use to create elements that model strategic capabilities and their requirements. The available elements include (strategic) Capability, Capability Configuration, Capability Requirement, Effect, and Strategic Mission.
UPIA System Modeling This capability provides tools that you can use to create system elements to define a high-level implementation of the architecture. The available elements include Systems, System Functions, System Interfaces, and Systems Nodes for the deployment of systems.
