Profile tooling overview

When you create or modify a UML profile, you can add items to pop-up menus and palettes for the profile, and custom graphics, wizards, and properties views. All of these elements make up profile tooling. You can add these items so that profile users see specific palettes and pop-up menus that you define when the custom profile is applied to a model. For example, if you create a custom UML profile, you can define a custom stereotype that has special semantics for your company, such as OurTypeOfSessionBean. You can then define a specific pop-up menu and palette items for this stereotype along with custom properties. You can also add custom properties and wizards to your profile tooling as well.

Before you begin

In order to use Profile Tooling, you must install the Modeling extensibility feature by using IBM® Installation Manager. Before you create custom menu and palette items for a profile, ensure that the profile is released; otherwise, you might encounter compatibility issues if you modify the profile.
Restriction: Profile tooling cannot be applied to sequence diagrams.
Tip: In addition to the Profile Tooling online help, a profile tooling-specific white paper is available from the IBM support site that guides you through the basics of generating tooling for elements from a new or existing UML profile. A link to this resource is available in the Related Information section at the bottom of this topic.
