Configuring custom queries for the UPIA diagram update tool

This content applies to version 7.5.4 or later. You can configure custom queries to populate or update diagrams with elements from a UPIA model. Queries that you define are available to use when you run the Custom Queries tool from the Explore tab of the Palette.

About this task

To define a custom query for the diagram Explore tool:

Procedure

  1. Click Window > Preferences, expand Modeling > UPIA Modeling, and then click Explore Tools.
  2. Click the Custom Queries tab and perform one of the following steps:
    • To create a new query that is not based upon an existing query, click New.
    • From the Query name list, select a query. The list displays both predefined queries and any custom queries that you have created.
  3. Optional: To copy an existing query that is currently selected, click Copy, enter a unique query name and ID, and then click OK. New queries can be created or copied from any existing query, but only queries that you define can be renamed or deleted.
  4. Optional: In the edit box, type a description of the query.
  5. From the Search Scope list, select a default location to define the scope in which to find element types when the update query is run.
  6. Select one or more element types to find when the update query is run.
  7. Optional: Configure the update options.
    1. Click the Show derived element types check box to show all elements from a type hierarchy that is defined in the UPIA profile, without selecting the individual element types.
    2. For Operational Resource Description-based queries, click the Generate information exchanges and needlines first check box to automatically generate these elements in the model before updating the diagram.
    3. For Systems Interface Description-based queries, click the Generate data exchanges and system interfaces first check box to automatically generate these elements in the model before updating the diagram.
  8. Click OK.
