Querying elements for trace relationships

In a UML model, you can run one of the four traceability queries on a context element to shows its trace relationships. For example, you can trace a specific use case back to its requirements to understand the motivation behind that use case, or you can trace a requirement to its implementations to see how it is realized.

To query elements for trace relationships:

Procedure

  1. In the Project Explorer view, select and right-click an element; then click Query > Traceability.
  2. Complete one of the following steps:
    • To discover all specifications at all levels of abstraction, click All Specifications.
    • To discover all specifications at the next level of abstraction, click Specifications.
    • To discover all implementations at all levels of abstraction, click All Implementations.
    • To discover all implementations at the next level of abstraction, click Implementations.
  3. In the Save as window, specify a parent folder and file name and click OK.
  4. Optional: To further explore specifications and implementations in a diagram, in the Palette, click the Explore tab and click Traceability. To display specifications or implementations at the next level of abstraction, click Specifications or Implementations; then click an element in a diagram.
