Tools for troubleshooting: Remote Systems view

This topic describes features in the Remote Systems view that you can use in troubleshooting problems that you might encounter in running the completed Web service for the tutorial.

The My Jobs node in the Remote Systems view

The My Jobs node in the Remote Systems view contains output files for jobs that are submitted under your user ID.

Use the information from these output files to verify that JCL files submitted by you or by the Generate Runtime Code wizard have run without errors.

To access this node:

  1. In the Remote Systems view, expand JES > My Jobs > <job_id>, where <job_id> is a job identifier for one of your recent jobs, such as USER25C:JOB25026.

  2. To refresh the files under the job identifier, right-click the identifier and click Refresh.

  3. To view a file under the job identifier, right-click the file and click Open. The file is opened in a text editor.

The MSGUSR file for the CICS region

The MSGUSR file for your CICS® region contains messages that record the results of requests sent to the instance of CICS that is running the region.

Use the information in this file to see the results of requests such as the following:
  • Pipeline operations (in this tutorial the pipeline is CICSSFRP)
    • Creating a pipeline
    • Installing a pipeline
    • Initiating a pipeline scan
  • Scanning the service flow properties directory (/u/cicsts32/csfr/flowfiles/) for the SFP files (SAMPCIRN.SFP and SAMPCARN.SFP)
  • Submitting the JCL jobs (SAMPCIPN.JCL and SAMPCAPN.JCL)
  • Creation of the resources:
    • The programs (SAMPCIPN and SAMPCAPN)
    • The transactions (SADI and SADP)
    • The processes (SAMPCIRN and SAMPCARN)

To view the contents of the MSGUSR file:

  1. Create a filter that displays output files for the existing instances of CICS:
    1. In the Remote Systems view, right-click JES.
    2. Click New > New JES Job Filter. The New Filter wizard opens.
    3. On the first page the New Filter wizard:
      1. Specify values for the input fields:

        Job Owner *
        Job Name Prefix
        Note: Specify a string that matches part or all of the name of your CICS job. If you do not know what string to use, ask your systems programmer.

        For example, in an environment in which all CICS jobs have the prefix CICS, you could specify CICS*.

        Job Status *
        Job Class *
        Job Output Class *
      2. Click Next.
    4. On the second page of the New Filter wizard:
      1. In the Filter name field, type the name that you want to use for the filter, such as CICS Jobs.
      2. Click Finish.

    In the Remote Systems view, under JES, a node for the new filter CICS Jobs appears.

  2. In the Remote Systems view, expand JES > CICS Jobs. A list of nodes is displayed, each node containing the output files for a particular CICS region.

  3. Expand the node for the most recent instance of the job running your CICS region, such as CICS01:JOB24246.

  4. Find the entry for the MSGUSR file, such as CICS:MSGUSR.

  5. Right-click the MSGUSR file and click Open. The file opens in a text editor in the editor area.

  6. In the editor find the entries for your CICS operations and see whether the operations were successful.
    Note: You can press Ctrl-F to search the file for text strings such as:
    • Your user ID
    • The name of your pipeline
    • Your Web service application SAMPCARN.

The host connection emulator

The host connection emulator is terminal emulator that automatically connects to a remote z/OS® system for which you have an active connection in the Remote Systems view.

Use this feature to log on to and use a remote z/OS system independently of the Enterprise Service Tools perspective.
Note: Alternatively you can use a host connection that you have created in the Enterprise Service Tools perspective (see Step 2.1: Create a host connection).

To use the host connection emulator:

  1. In the Remote Systems view, right-click the connection that you created for your remote (such as system.company -- see Set up a connection to z/OS in the Remote Systems view.

  2. Click Host Connection Emulator. The emulator opens and connects to the remote z/OS system.

If the connection fails then click the Host Properties tab and check the connection properties.
