Lesson 2: Create a connection to the host system and partitioned data sets

Before you can start building the project, you must create partitioned data sets on the host system in which to store the source and files generated when you assemble, link, and compile the source.
Tip: You will need to know the IP address or name of your host system as well as have permission to access it.

To create a connection to the host system and partitioned data sets:

  1. Create a new z/OS® connection. Instructions for this can be found in Creating a connection to a remote system
  2. Allocate a partitioned data set for the assembly code by filling in the Data Set Name text field with AUTOMART.ASSEMBLE. Instructions for this can be found in Allocating data sets and working with remote files.
  3. Create additional partitioned data sets with the appropriate settings for your host system by repeating steps 1-2 and filling in the Data Set Name field with one of the following for each of the created partitioned data sets: AUTOMART.COBOL, AUTOMART.JCL, AUTOMART.COPYBOOK, AUTOMART.SYSDEBUG, AUTOMART.COPYLIB, AUTOMART.OBJ, AUTOMART.DBRM, and AUTOMART.LISTING. These partitioned data sets will store both source files and files generated during assembling, linking, and compiling. If you have any questions about what settings should be assigned to each partitioned data set, contact your systems administrator.
In your host system, under MVS Files > My Data Sets you should see all the partitioned data sets you just created.
