Template association

This topic describes how to apply templates to data sets for use within the Formatted Data Editor.

Templates can be applied to data sets before opening an edit session or during an active edit session. In order to start the Formatted Data Editor with a template applied against a data set, the desired template must first be defined within the properties panel of the data set. The template association properties panel is available on sequential data sets and VSAM clusters by default, and only on PDS members that have had the .tdat extension appended to them.

To open the template association properties panel:
  1. Right-click the target data set and select Properties.
  2. After the properties dialog opens, select the Template Association option on the left sidebar.

In the template association panel, there are two options for selecting a template to be associated with a data set. The first option allows you to enter the remote data set location manually if you know the fully qualified path of the template. You can also select a previously used template from history by selecting the drop-down arrow. The second option enables a template to be selected from a navigation tree of current data sets known to RSE. Browse to the desired template and select it.

The Template Association Panel provides a location to specify a template to be used with a specific data set prior to opening an edit session in the Formatted Data Editor.

Alternatively, templates can also be applied in the Formatted Data Editor during an active edit session. This ability allows templates to be changed at any time without exiting the editor or losing any changes made to the open data set. Templates can be applied or changed in an active edit session several ways:

When a template change is attempted during an active edit session, all existing modifications to the open data set must be saved in order for them to be preserved when the new template is applied. If a save is not performed, all existing modifications will be lost when the Formatted Data Editor refreshes to display the new template.
