Rational Developer for System z

Storing non Eclipse file types in SCLM

SCLM enables the storage of any file type. Using this function you can store artifacts and other code based members in SCLM. Word or Word Pro® documents can be stored and edited from SCLM using the SCLM Developer Toolkit.

To use this feature correctly a number of features or settings must be enabled. Go to Windows->Preferences and select General->Editors->File Associations to register the file name extension with the desired external editor. For example, you can configure the .doc extension to be associated with Microsoft Word.

Subsequently, when an editor function is invoked on a file with the .doc extension the Word editor is invoked. Other associations, such as spreadsheets Rational® tools can be configured here. In order to add the file to SCLM, it must be first imported into the workspace. The file can then be added using the Add to SCLM function. The Language and Type must be configured correctly in SCLM to ensure that the file is stored as a binary object. Check with the SCLM administrator to ensure the correct language definitions exist. Once the file is stored in SCLM, it can be accessed as any other object would be. The file in the workspace can be deleted if required.

It is likely that developers do not want non-development objects cluttering their workspace, so an alternative method for accessing these objects are the SCLM Developer Mode and SCLM Explorer Mode. By populating these views with the requisite objects types (Language/Type), these members can be edited with the Edit / Check out function and accessed as any normal Word document would be. The principal change is that you must Check In the file in after editing has finished. This stores the latest changes back to SCLM.

Any form of document can be stored and accessed in SCLM using this process.
