Rational Developer for System z

Setting bidirectional conversion support for an MVS system mapping

Rational® Developer for System z® provides special bidirectional properties for MVS™ system mappings to allow correct bidirectional layout conversions for files transferred between the client and server. There are three methods for specifying these options: To set bidirectional conversion support for an MVS system mapping, do these steps:
  1. Right-click a mapping criterion in the z/OS® File System Mapping view and click Edit. The Edit Data Set Mapping window opens.
  2. In the Defined Language section, click Default to set bidirectional conversion options based on the Workstation file extension field or Other to select a language for the file extension. Bidirectional conversion in the Remote System Explorer is sensitive to the programming language in which source code is written. Usually you can assume that the Workstation file extension field selects the correct language. In some cases, however, such as .cpy for COBOL and PL/I and .mac for PL/I and Assembler, the same file extensions can be used with different languages. The Other option enables you to select a specific language to associate with the file extension.
  3. To inherit the bidirectional settings from the MVS Files subsystem, click Inherit from properties for MVS Files. If the MVS Files subsystem uses a bidirectional conversion table, the name of the table is shown in parentheses and the properties inherited are shown in the Inherited set of bidi options table. See the related topics for more information on property inheritance.
  4. To use a bidirectional conversion table, do these steps:
    1. Click Use the following Bidi Conversion Table (BCT). This option enables the text entry field and the Browse and Copy buttons.
    2. Enter the name of a bidirectional conversion table you have created or click Browse to look for and select a conversion file. See the related topics for more information on creating a bidirectional conversion table.
    3. To replace the current code page settings with the code pages specified in the bidirectional conversion table, click Copy. The code pages specified in the bidirectional conversion table are shown below the file name field. Code pages in the bidirectional conversion table have no effect on data conversion during file transfers (which use the code pages specified in the Code Pages section of this window), but you can replace currently used code pages with those specified in the bidirectional conversion table using the Copy button.
  5. To use manual bidirectional settings, do these steps:
    1. Click Use the following manual bidi settings. This option enables a set of default bidirectional settings.
    2. Click Edit to open a dialog that you can use to change the default settings.
    3. Click Save as to save the current settings to a new bidirectional conversion table.
  6. Click OK to apply the changes.
