Rational Developer for System z

Developing DB2 applications

This topic illustrates the Rational® Developer for System z® tools for developing DB2® applications.

Summary

Rational Developer for System z provides tools for developing local and remote DB2 applications. It incorporates the functions of the IBM® Data Tools Developer suite of integrated tools for database administrators and application developers and adds a feature for creating DB2 stored procedures. Together these tools enable you to create connections to DB2 databases, incorporate database functions into your application development efforts, and deploy your DB2 applications on local or remote systems.

In general, creating a DB2 application using Rational Developer for System z involves the following tasks.

  1. If you are developing an application on a remote z/OS® system, create a connection to the system.
  2. Configure a connection to the DB2 database.
  3. Incorporate DB2 functions into your programs.
  4. Create DB2 stored procedures in PL/I or COBOL.
  5. Incorporate DB2 preprocessor support into your build process.
These tasks can vary according to the source and target locations of your application (local or remote) and how your application is to be deployed.
