BMS Screen Designer (BMS Map Editor)

BMS Screen Design is a function performed by the BMS Map Editor. This tool provides visual creation and/or modification of BMS map sets (a BMS map set defines a screen for a CICS® application). The BMS Map Editor is designed for CICS developers who are familiar with terminal-based tools (for example, SDF II) or GUI-based tools (such as the BMS Map Editor included with VisualAge® COBOL.

For a step-by-step guide through many of the BMS Map Editor options, see the Tutorial for the BMS Map Editor.

What's new

Set auxiliary alignment hairlines in the BMS Map Editor
This enhancement provides the addition of guides to the design page. The guides can be created vertically or horizontally, by simply clicking on the vertical or horizontal ruler. The fields can then be attached to these guides, so that the fields can be aligned. In addition, the guides can be moved along the design page, this causes all the fields attached to the guide to move along with it.
Guides can be deleted by simply selecting the guide and pressing the Delete button. Undo/Redo is supported for the guide actions. The guide is only shown if the ruler is visible. Turning the ruler on/off is available as a preference option. Default for TUI-based editors is to show rulers at all times
Ability to copy and move a BMS field using Ctrl+mouse
This enhancement allows the ability of selection and copy of on or more fields and then pressing the Ctrl key. Keeping the Ctrl key pressed, move the mouse to the desired location on the screen. Then let go of the mouse button and then the Ctrl key. This action creates a copy of the selected field(s) at the current mouse location. (Essentially this is a copy-paste function). In addition, after performing this function, the relative locations of the selected fields is retained.
Note: The standard way of copying to clipboard and then pasting it in the design page is still available.

Editor features

BMS map sets and their associated projects are displayed in the Project Explorer view. The Palette view provides both click-and-drop and drag-and-drop access to the BMS map components. The editor provides additional capability with the Outline and Properties views.
The BMS Map Editor provides the following pages for designing and viewing a map set:
Design
Contains the Design canvas and display customization options, including map filtering. Contextual right-click menus provide additional formatting and display options.
Source
Provides a text editor for editing the map set file code directly. This page is optionally read-only based on a BMS Map Editor preference.
Preview
Provides terminal-style and Web preview modes.

The BMS Map Editor enables you to export maps as JavaServer Faces Web pages. For details see Generating a JSF Web page.

Working with map sets

You can use the new map set wizard to create new map set files within an existing local or remote MVS™ project. You can also create a new BMS map set file directly on the remote host.

Within certain perspectives (such as Enterprise Service Tools or Host Access Transformation Services), you can import an existing file structure into a workspace. You can also use the BMS Map Editor to work with a map set that resides on the host.

Object properties

You can view field properties, map properties, or map set properties by selecting the item in the Outline view; the information is displayed in the Properties view. You can also view and configure a map set component by using the Design page pop-up menu.
