Rational Developer for System z

Step B3(c). Allocate partitioned data sets on MVS

Use the Remote Systems view in the Enterprise Service Tools perspective to allocate three partitioned data sets (PDS's) on MVS™: a PDS to contain COBOL source members, a PDS to contain COBOL copy book members, and a PDS to contain JCL members.

When you run the Generate Runtime Code wizard, you specify these three PDS's as the destinations to which you want the wizard to copy these three different categories of output files (see JES, MVS, and connections -- when needed and Step B7. The Selection of target locations page of the Generate Runtime Code wizard).

For names to use for PDS's see Tips for naming partitioned data sets.

To allocate PDS's using the Remote Systems view:

  1. In the EST Perspective, in the Remote Systems view, expand the connection (for example, system.company) to the remote system to which you want the Generate Runtime wizard to copy the output files.

  2. Start the MVS connection if it is not already started (see Step B3(b). Start the connection to the remote z/OS system).

  3. Perform the following steps three times, once for each PDS:
    1. Right-click the MVS Files subnode, then click New > Allocate Partitioned Data Set. The New Data Set wizard opens.

    2. On the Allocate Partitioned Data Set page:
      1. In the Host Name list, select the Remote Systems connection for the system on which you want to allocate the PDS.
      2. Under Data Set Name:
        1. In the list on the left select a user name (such as USER25).
        2. In the input field type a high-level qualifier (such as ESTCO.USER.) followed by a low-level qualifier (such as SRCLIB, COPYLIB, or JCL).
      3. Click Next.
    3. On the Data Set Allocation page of the New Data Set wizard:
      1. Select the radio button Specify characteristics by usage type.
      2. In the Category list box, select SOURCE.
      3. In the Type list box, select one of the following types:
        • Select COBOL if you are creating the PDS to contain COBOL members.
        • Select COBOL if you are creating the PDS to contain COBOL copy book members.
        • Select JCL if you are creating the PDS to contain JCL members.
      4. Click Next.
    4. On the Data Set Characteristics page of the New Data Set wizard:
      1. You can accept the default values for the characteristics of the PDS or specify new values.
      2. Click Finish.

      The PDS is created.
