Rational Developer for System z

Step 2.1: Create a host connection

In this step you will create a host connection file that allows you to connect to your target z/OS® host.

The z/OS host must have CICS® Transaction Server for z/OS V3.1 or later installed and the catalog sample application (egui) must be available on CICS (see Required environment, materials, and assistance).

Create a host connection file

To create a host connection file for your z/OS host:

  1. In the EST Project Explorer, right-click the CatalogSample.Terminal subproject.

  2. Click New > Host Connection. The New Host Connection wizard opens.

  3. On the first page of the New Host Connection wizard, titled Specify Destination:

    1. In the File name input field, type the name that you want to use for the host connection file (for example, system).

    2. Click Next.

  4. On the second page of the New Host Connection wizard, titled Basic Settings:

    1. In the Host name input field, type the IP address or the host name of your z/OS host (for example, system.company.com).

    2. In the Port input field, type the number of the host port that you want to attach to (for example, 623).

    3. Do not change the contents of the remaining input fields.

    4. Click Finish. The wizard creates the new host connection file and opens it in the host editor.

      Note:
      • When a host connection file is opened in the host editor, the host editor automatically attempts to connect to the host using the values specified in the host connection file.
      • The connection should be successful.
      • If the connection fails, then you can attempt to connect to the host system by following these steps:
        1. If the session is not connected:
          1. Click the Properties tab at the bottom of the host editor window.
          2. The Host Connection Settings window opens in the editor area. In the Properties window, verify that the host connection is configured properly.
          3. If you make any changes, press Ctrl-S to save your changes.
          4. Click the Terminal tab at the bottom of the host editor window. The session window opens in the editor area.
          5. On the toolbar at the top of the session window, click the Connect to Host Connect to Host icon.
        2. If the session is still not connected:
          1. Verify that the line is active and that the host is configured properly.
          2. Click the Connect to Host Connect to Host icon again.
  5. For now, close the host editor.

Note: The new host connection file should be displayed in the Hosts subfolder. To open this subfolder, in the EST Project Explorer, expand CatalogSample > CatalogSample.Terminal > Hosts.
