Table format

This topic describes the table format within the Formatted Data Editor.

The table format uses the record layout information provided by a template to format the records of a data set into a table layout. The table format is only available during a formatted edit session, and only one record layout can be displayed at a time. If a different record layout is needed, the template associated with the data set should be changed. Each column in the table format relates to one field in the currently selected record layout. The name of each field can be found in the header of each column. The field's data type, field number, default record offset, and default length can be viewed in the Single format.

A data set displayed in a table format with each row representing a different record and each column representing a different field of the record.

The table format is the default view during a formatted edit session and is one of the primary tools used for editing a data set. The contents of the table format can be edited simply by selecting a field in the table and typing over the existing content. When editing a data set in this fashion, you can choose to insert new text along side the existing text, or overwrite the existing text all together. Insert mode is enabled by default, but can quickly be toggled to overwrite mode by pressing the Insert key on your keyboard. In addition to the editing functionality provided by the table format, it also provides filtering, based on information stored in an associated template. Selection criteria defined within templates are visualized in the table format through the use of shadow lines. These shadow lines represent suppressed sets, not-selected records, and excluded records.
