Run and debug the plug-in project

This lesson will teach you how to run and debug the plug-in you created in the previous exercise.

To run and debug the plug-in:

  1. In the Package Explorer view, make sure there are no errors in your Eclipse plug-in project. If there are, follow the little, red X, error icon down through the directories to the source, and correct these errors before proceeding.
  2. In the main menu bar, select the drop down arrow beside the Run button , and select Run Configurations from the menu.
    1. To debug, you would select the down button beside the Debug icon , select Debug Configurations, and follow the rest of the steps.
  3. From the left menu, double click on the Eclipse Application option. A new run configuration will open, this may take a little while to open.
  4. Select the Configurations tab from the top tab menu.
  5. Mark the check box, Clear the configuration area before launching. If this is not set, Rational® Developer for System z® will not know to pick up the new plug-ins you developed.
  6. Click Apply to save the changes.
  7. You can select which plug-ins you have developed to run in the testing workbench. To do this, select the Plug-ins tab from the top menu.
  8. In the Launch With dropdown menu, select the option: plug-ins selected below only.
  9. In the panel below the dropdown menu will be a list of the various plug-ins associated with Rational Developer for System z. Find the directory labeled Workspace. Check the plug-ins you want included in your build. Uncheck those you do not want to be included in the build.
  10. Click Run. This will launch a second instance of Rational Developer for System z in a testing workspace.
Note: If you have already launched Rational Developer for System z in the testing workspace once before, be sure to close it out before you launch it again, else you will get an error.
Return to the exercise summary for steps on how to determine if your CARMA plug-in ran successfully.
