Properties for remote data sets and data set members in the Remote Systems view

Each of the nodes that are displayed in the Remote Systems view has properties associated with it. This topic focuses on the properties of data sets and the properties of members of data sets, as they affect the types of files that are created by the Generate Runtime Code wizard.

The properties of a data set are options that the Remote Systems view uses when it performs (or when it instructs CICS® to perform) certain tasks on the members of the data set. These tasks include such operations as uploading a file to the data set, running a JCL member of the data set, compiling and linking a member of the data set, and other tasks (see the general help section titled Developing z/OS® applications and Web service interfaces). When you allocate a new data set in the Remote Systems view, the view sets each property of the new data set to a default value. But you can subsequently modify the value of any property of an individual data set (see the instructions described later in this topic).

Note: The properties of the MVS Files node contain the default values that are assigned to the properties of a new data set, when you allocate the new data set from the Remote Systems view. If you change the value of one of these properties in the MVS Files node, then the new value is used when a new data set is allocated from the Remote Systems view. But the new value does not affect properties in already existing data sets in the Remote Systems view.

The types of properties associated with a member of a data set are the same types of properties that are associated with the data set itself (alluded to in the previous paragraph). In the case of many of these properties, a member inherits the value of a particular property from the value assigned to the same property in the data set to which the member belongs. You can also set the properties of a member individually for each member. However, usually you will want to set the properties of the data set to the values that you want and let the members inherit the values of the properties from the data set.

To change the properties of a data set or a member:
  1. Right-click the data set (or member).
  2. Select Properties. The Properties window opens.
  3. Select the values in the Properties window.
  4. When you are finished, click OK to store the new values and close the Properties window.
In general, when you are using the service flow project tools, you do not need to modify the default value of any property of a data set. However, in a few instances it is a good idea to change the value of a particular property so that an operation can run successfully or perform certain options. See the following links:
