Specifying a variable message later on during flow recording

This topic describes the process of specifying a new variable message file and a new variable message later on during flow recording, rather than at the start of flow recording.

If you did not specify a variable message file and a variable message to contain the variables required by Extract actions, Insert actions, and recorded loops (see The variable message of a flow) at the start of flow recording, and later on during flow recording you attempt to record an Extract action, an Insert action, or a loop, then the recording process allows you at that time to specify a variable message file and a variable message to contain the variable for the Extract action, Insert action, or loop variable.

The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. You click Extract Data from Screen Extract, Insert Data into Screen Insert, or Begin Loop Begin Loop on the toolbar of the host editor.

  2. The host editor displays the No Variable Message File window to tell you that you need to specify a variable message file and a variable message to contain variables for Extract actions, Insert actions, and recorded loops in the flow.

  3. You click OK to close the window.

  4. The host editor displays the Select Message Variable File window, which allows you to select an existing message file and message, or to create a new message file and message, to be the variable message file and the variable message of the flow.

  5. The host editor then allows you create the Extract action, Insert action, or recorded loop.
