Setting bidirectional conversion support for a data set or PDS member

Rational® Developer for System z® provides special bidirectional properties for MVS™ data sets and PDS members to allow correct bidirectional layout conversions for files transferred between the client and server. There are three methods for specifying these options: To set bidirectional conversion support for a data set or PDS member, do these steps:
  1. Right-click a data set or member in the Remote Systems view and click Properties. The Properties window opens.
  2. Click Mapping in the list on the left.
  3. In the Defined Language section, click Default to set bidirectional conversion options based on the Workstation file extension field or Other to select a language for the file extension. Bidirectional conversion in the Remote System Explorer is sensitive to the programming language in which source code is written. Usually you can assume that the Workstation file extension field selects the correct language. In some cases, however, such as .cpy for COBOL and PL/I and .mac for PL/I and Assembler, the same file extensions can be used with different languages. The Other option enables you to select a specific language to associate with the file extension.
  4. To inherit the bidirectional settings from the MVS Files subsystem, click Inherit from properties for MVS Files. If the MVS Files subsystem uses a bidirectional conversion table, the name of the table is shown in parentheses and the properties inherited are shown in the Inherited set of bidi options table.   5. To use a bidirectional conversion table, do these steps:
    1. Click Use the following Bidi Conversion Table (BCT). This option enables the text entry field and the Browse button.
    2. Enter the name of a bidirectional conversion file you have created or click Browse to look for and select a conversion file. See the related topics for more information on creating a bidirectional conversion table.
    3. To edit the current properties in the bidirectional conversion table, click Copy. The properties are copied to the Current set of bidi options table and you can click Edit to change the values and Save as to save your changes to a new bidirectional conversion table.
  6. To use manual bidirectional settings, do these steps:
    1. Click Use the following manual bidi settings. This option enables a set of default bidirectional settings.
    2. Click Edit to open a dialog that you can use to change the default settings.
    3. Click Save as to save the current settings to a new bidirectional conversion table.
  7. Click OK to apply the changes.
