Screen message editor

The screen message editor is the default editor provided by the Enterprise Service Tools perspective for editing screen messages (smScreenMessage.sfmxsd).

The screen message editor is started in the editor area when you open an existing screen message in the EST Project Explorer. (To create a new screen message, see Creating a screen message).

You do not need a connection to a host to run the screen message editor.

Screen message editor views

The screen message editor has the following views:
EST Project Explorer view
The EST Project Explorer view displays a hierarchical view of all the resources that currently exist in your workspace. You can see the screen messages within a service flow project by expanding the Messages subfolder in the terminal applications subproject of the service flow project.
Editor area
The editor area has three tabs, which you can open alternately by selecting the appropriate tab at the bottom of the editor area.
  • The Screen Structure tab displays an image of the application screen from which the screen message that you are editing was originally created, and allows you to read the screen text, view the name of a field in the screen, or select a field to learn more about it.
  • The Screen Descriptions tab allows you create and edit screen descriptions and descriptors in the screen message that you are editing.
  • The Source tab displays the XML source text of the screen message that you are editing.
Outline view
The contents of this view depend on which tab of the screen message editor is currently selected in the editor area.
  • When the Screen Structure tab is selected, the Outline view displays the names of all the fields in the screen message and allows you to select a field to learn more about.
  • When the Screen Descriptions tab is selected, the Outline view displays the contents of all the screen descriptions and descriptors in the screen message and allows you to select an individual descriptor to work on.
Properties view
The contents of this view depend on which tab of the screen message editor is currently selected in the editor area:
  • When the Screen Structure tab is selected, the Properties view displays the properties of the currently selected field and allows you to edit the Name property (which specifies the field's name).
  • When the Screen Descriptions tab is selected, the Properties view displays the properties of the currently selected descriptor and allows you to edit those properties.
