Bidirectional host-terminal functions

The host terminal provides specific key functions. Specific Arabic limitations exist.

See Table 1.

Table 1. Bidirectional host-terminal functions
Function Key combination Description
Latin Layer Ctrl+L This function changes the language layer to Latin. English is displayed in the operator information area.
Bidirectional Layer Ctrl+N This function changes the language layer to bidirectional. The bidirectional language is displayed in the operator information area.
Screen Reverse Ctrl+S This function reverses the screen orientation:
  • If the screen orientation is left-to-right, this function changes the screen image to right-to-left and the language layer to bidirectional.
  • If the screen orientation is right-to-left, this function changes the screen image to left-to-right and the language layer to Latin.
Restriction: This function is not available for VT visual sessions.
Field Reverse Ctrl+F This function reverses the field orientation:
  • If the field orientation is left-to-right, this function changes the field orientation to right-to-left. The cursor moves to the other side of the field, and the language layer becomes bidirectional.

Close Ctrl+C This function sets the following values::
  • The data that is entered is concatenated with the data that was previously entered in the opposite direction.
  • The cursor direction is set to be the same as the field direction.
  • The cursor is positioned after the concatenated text:
    • If the screen orientation is currently left-to-right, the cursor is positioned at the first null to the right of the concatenated text.
    • If the screen orientation is currently right-to-left, the cursor is positioned at the first null to the left of the concatenated text.
  • The language layer is set to the default value for the field direction.
Push Ctrl+P This function enables push mode. You can enter and edit text in the opposite direction from that specified for the field.
Restriction: This function is for 3270 sessions only.
End Push Ctrl+O This function disables push mode. The cursor moves to the end of the push segment.
Restriction: This function is for 3270 sessions only.
Auto Push Ctrl+A This function enables you to enter a mixture of left-to-right and right-to-left text. The language layer switches between bidirectional and Latin.
Restriction: This function is for 3270 sessions only.

Arabic considerations

The following problems occur when you use the English-system keyboard setting with an Arabic 101 or Arabic 102 keyboard.
Arabic 101 keyboard
  • The period (.) and forward slash (/) characters are not correctly displayed.
  • The Tatweel character is displayed as ZAL. Press Shift+J to type the Tatweel character.
Arabic 102 keyboard
  • The Shift+S key combination does not produce any typed output.
  • The Shift+J key combination produces the Tatweel character.
  • The Shift+L key combination produces the backslash (\) character.
  • In order to type an upper-case J, S, or L, you must change the keyboard layer to English.
