Associating an interface operation with a flow

This topic describes how an interface operation is associated with a flow.

An operation used with a flow is called an interface operation, because it defines the programming interface of the flow (see Working with operations).

When an interface operation is associated with a particular flow, each element of the operation is related to some part of the flow:
Element of an operation: Relation to associated flow:
The operation itself (such as, "queryAccount") The name by which the flow will be invoked.
Input message The Receive node of the flow.
Output message One is needed for each Reply node in the flow.
Fault message One is needed for each Throw node in the flow.

The term service interface is used to refer to an operation that is associated with the main flow of your design. The main flow is the flow that provides the entry point to the runtime code that you plan to generate from your service flow project.

The term service interface originates from the fact that if you are generating runtime code for the CICS® Service Flow Runtime, then the resulting runtime code implements a service flow. Therefore the operation that provides the information for accessing the service is an interface to the service, or a service interface.
