Contents of a screen message that contains BMS map information

The contents of a screen message that contains BMS map information are essentially the same as the contents of an ordinary screen message that is created by capturing an application screen in the host editor, but there are a few important differences.

Use the Import BMS wizard to create screen messages from screen maps in a BMS file (see Importing a BMS map). You can also add BMS map information to an existing screen message (see Assigning BMS field names).

The screen structure of a screen message that contains BMS map information, just like the screen structure of an ordinary screen message, contains a record of all the fields in the corresponding application screen, including location, size, attributes, and contents (see Screen message, screen description, descriptor). (However, this information is gathered from a BMS map rather than being read from the screen buffer of the host editor.)

The main difference, as far as the screen structure goes, is that if a field has a name in the BMS map (for example, INQ5-DESC) then the screen structure uses this name (INQ5-DESC) for the field rather than a default field name (such as Field224).

The screen description of a screen message that contains BMS map information can contain the same types of descriptors as in the screen description of an ordinary screen message. You can add, modify, and delete these descriptors with the screen message editor, just as you can with screen messages that do not contain BMS map information.

However, the Generate Runtime Code wizard processes certain descriptors differently, depending on the target runtime of the generation properties file, the flow type of the flow, and whether the screen message contains BMS information (see Support for screen descriptors in the runtime environments and When the flow type is Link3270 Bridge -- BMS map information).

A screen message that contains BMS map information contains additional information from the BMS map, such as the name of the BMS mapset to which the map belongs.
