Running a simple COBOL application on a remote system

Objectives

This tutorial shows you some of the functionality of Rational® Developer for System z® in the context of running a COBOL application on a remote system. It explains how to allocate a partitioned data set, create a z/OS® project, build executable code from COBOL source, run an application on the remote system, and debug an application on the remote system.

Prerequisites

Before you start this tutorial, make sure that your z/OS system administrator has configured and started the z/OS build server and Remote System Explorer server. Refer to the Host Configuration Guide on installation CD 1 for information on installing and configuring these required components.

Steps

  1. Switch to the z/OS Projects perspective.
  2. Create a new RSE connection to your z/OS remote system.
  3. Expand the My Data Sets filter (created by default) under MVS Files in the Remote Systems view to list the available data sets on your z/OS remote system.
  4. Allocate a new partitioned data set on your z/OS remote system. This partitioned data set will contain the COBOL source files. In the Allocate Partitioned Data Set window, choose to specify characteristics by usage type, select the category type to be SOURCE, and select the source type to be COBOL.
  5. Click File > New > Example. Expand Workstation COBOL and click COBOL Sample 1 in the list. Click Next.
  6. Specify LocalCOBOLSample as the project name and click Finish.
  7. Copy the COBOL source files, PrintApp.cbl and StartApp.cbl, to the partitioned data set you allocated earlier.
  8. Create a z/OS project called SampleProject.
  9. Create an MVS™ subproject called RemoteCOBOLSample. Configure the COBOL build step under the ELAXFCOC procedure by adding the following JCL:

  10. Add the partitioned data set you allocated earlier to the RemoteCOBOLSample subproject.
  11. Build the RemoteCOBOLSample subproject, using STARTAPP.cbl as the entry point. At the end of the build operation, the listings, object decks, and generated load module should be added to the subproject.
  12. Right-click on the generated load module, and click Run Application to run the application. Alternatively, you can click Debug Application in the context menu to debug the application.
