Providing screen descriptions for recording

Before you start a screen operations recording or a flow recording, you should first decide how you want to provide screen descriptions for the recording process. There are two options. You should use the option that best fits your needs.
The two options are: The rest of this topic describes these two options in detail.
Important: Before you start recording, click the Reload Screen Descriptions icon Reload Screen Descriptions to load the most recent versions of your screen descriptions into memory (see Currently loaded screen descriptions).

Option 1: Have the host editor automatically capture an application screen and create a screen description for you whenever you need one during screen operations recording or flow recording.

Although this is not the default option, this option makes the task of creating screen descriptions much easier for you.

This option is appropriate when the following two conditions are true:

To select this option:
  1. On the top menu line of the workbench, click Window > Preferences.
  2. In the left pane, expand Enterprise Service Tools and select Service Flow Projects.
  3. In the right pane:
    1. Select the check box Automatically capture new screens.
    2. If you want to provide a name for each captured screen, rather than have the host editor create a default name for you, then you should clear the check box Do not prompt for name when automatically capturing screens. Otherwise, select this check box.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences window.

When you select the Automatically capture new screens check box, then during recording, each time that you navigate to the next application screen, the host editor first attempts to find a screen description that matches the currently displayed application screen (see Currently loaded screen descriptions). If the host editor finds a matching screen description, then it uses that screen description. If not, then:
  1. The host editor creates a new screen message.
  2. The host editor creates a default screen description for the currently displayed application screen (using exactly the same process that occurs when you manually create a screen description by clicking the Capture Screen icon Capture Screen Description) and adds the default screen description to the new screen message (see Default screen description).
  3. The host editor obtains a name for the new screen description and screen.
    • If you cleared the check box Do not prompt for name when automatically capturing screens in the Preferences window, then the host editor opens the Capture Screen window.
      1. The Capture Screen window prompts you for a new name for the screen description.
      2. You can either accept the default name that the host editor provides or type in a different name.
Note: The host editor also uses the same name for the new screen message:
    • However, if you selected the check box Do not prompt for name when automatically capturing screens in the Preferences window, then the host editor automatically, without prompting you, assigns a default name to the screen description and uses the same name for the new screen message.

Option 2: Obtain all the screen descriptions that you need before you start recording

This is the default option in the Preferences window. This option causes the host editor to pause recording and prompt you if, during either screen operations recording or flow recording, you navigate to an application screen for which the host editor cannot find a matching screen description among the currently loaded screen descriptions. The host editor opens the Screen Not Recognized window prompting you to select to automatically capture new screens, to create a screen description for the current application screen, or to terminate the recording (see Unrecognized application screen during recording).

This option is appropriate when you already have, within the currently loaded screen descriptions, a screen description to match all or most of the application screens that you will visit during recording, and you want the host editor to prompt you before automatically capturing a screen description.

To select this option:
  1. On the top menu line of the workbench, click Window > Preferences.
  2. In the left pane, expand Enterprise Service Tools and select Service Flow Projects.
  3. In the right pane, clear the check box Automatically capture new screens.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences window.
