Character page

This topic defines the use of character mode.

The character page displays information from the records of a data set in an alphanumeric format. The character page enables data sets both with and without associated templates to be edited without the use of any formatting. Records that are displayed within the character page are displayed in a raw, alphanumeric-only data format. If a data set has an associated template, all record layouts specified in the template will be ignored. Each record is treated as if it has a single alphanumeric field. Data that cannot be converted to an alphanumeric character representation will be displayed as a box, as depicted in the following figure. The character page is useful for viewing and editing data sets that contain unstructured text.

The character page is available from a tab located at the bottom of the Formatted Data Editor.
Note: Editing binary data using the character page is not recommended.
