3. Defining service steps

The third page of the New Service Flow Project wizard, titled Defining service steps, allows you to create and initialize a flow for the new service flow project.

A flow is a program-like sequence of operations from which you can generate runtime code for a supported runtime environment (see A flow). A flow consists of flow nodes (see Flow nodes) connected together into a path of execution called the flow path (see The flow path).

To use this page of the wizard, see one of the following subsections:
Note: After you have added Invoke nodes to the flow, and the New Service Flow Project wizard has created the service flow project, you can still modify or add to the new flow in any way, and you can create new flows (see Developing flows). Your flow is not limited to the options that you select in this wizard.

Aggregating COMMAREA, Channel, and/or Queueing applications

This option allows you to create a flow containing a sequence of Invoke nodes, each node invoking a particular nonterminal application (each invocation can be implemented as a LINK with COMMAREA invocation, a LINK with Channel invocation, or an WebSphere® MQ invocation):
  1. Click the radio button Aggregating COMMAREA, Channel, and/or Queueing applications.
  2. Click Next.
  3. The wizard displays the Specify existing program definitions page (see 4A. Specify existing program definitions),

Recording interactions with a terminal application

To create a flow containing a sequence of Invoke nodes, each node invoking a function that manages a particular screen of a terminal application:
  1. Click the radio button Recording interactions with a terminal application.
  2. Click Next.
  3. The wizard displays the Define host connection page (see 4B. Define host connection).

Naming the steps and implementing them later

To create a flow containing a sequence of Invoke nodes that you can later modify to invoke a nonterminal application or a flow:
  1. Click the radio button Naming the steps and implementing them later.
  2. Click Next.
  3. The wizard displays the Identify the steps of the flow page (see 4C. Identify the steps of the flow).

Defining later

This option causes the wizard to create an empty flow that you can populate later.

To create an empty flow:
  1. Click the radio button Defining later.
  2. Click Next to go to the next page of the wizard if there is one (see 5. COBOL import settings and 6. PL/I import settings) or click Finish to terminate the wizard and create the new service flow project.
  3. When the wizard terminates:
    1. The wizard creates the new service flow project.
    2. The wizard creates a flow.
    3. The wizard opens the flow in the flow editor.
  4. At this point, you can add nodes to the flow.
