Real-time syntax checking of COBOL files

The System z® LPEX Editor and the COBOL Editor automatically validate the syntax of COBOL code and embedded CICS® and SQL statements.

The editor performs real-time syntax checking and provides annotations describing the errors. If an error is found, a warning icon (exclamation mark in yellow triangle) is displayed. To see an annotation describing the error, hover your mouse over the icon. You can customize the appearance of text containing syntax errors by opening the General > Editors > Text Editors > Annotation preference page and selecting exclamation mark in yellow triangle Warnings near the bottom of the list. Instead of a yellow squiggly line under a warning, for example, you can display syntax errors with red highlighting or a green dashed box.

To turn off real-time syntax checking, select Disable editor annotations and tools on the COBOL Annotations and Tools preference page. To enable or disable SQL annotations, use the EXEC SQL statements preference page.
