System requirements

Before you can install the Rational DOORS v9.2 Database Server, your system must meet the following requirements:

• One of the following operating systems must be installed on your computer:
  
  
  • Windows® 2003 Server Standard Edition SP1.
  • Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition SP1. Clustering is not supported.
  • Windows 2003 Server R2 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Windows Vista Business Edition SP1 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Windows Vista Enterprise Edition SP1 32-bit.
  • Solaris 9 32-bit or 64-bit.

Before you can install the Rational DOORS v9.2 client, your system must meet the following requirements:

• The minimum system requirements are:
  
  
  • At least 128 MB RAM and a 350MHz processor
  • At least 200 MB of free disk space
  • TCP/IP

You must also consider the following requirements for your system:

• In order to download and install Rational DOORS v9.2, your organization must have a license with valid maintenance and be running versions 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 or 2.0 of the Rational License Server TL.
  
  For information about how to obtain a license, and about the Rational License Server TL, see the product's user documentation.
  


• If you are running the Rational Directory Server, you must be running version 5.0 or 5.1. For information about the Rational Directory Server, see the user documentation that is supplied with it.



• The computer where you want to install the Rational DOORS Database Server must be running TCP/IP.



• If you want to use FLEXnet licenses, the computer where you want to install the FLEXnet license server must be running TCP/IP.



• Your monitor resolution must be at least 800 by 600 pixels. We recommend at least 1024 by 768.



• If your display card supports only 256 colors, you may experience unusual color effects. Although this will not affect underlying data, we recommend you use a display that supports more than 256 colors.

At the time of writing, the following independent products have been tested with Rational DOORS v9.2:

• SunOne Directory Server 5.2
• Microsoft® Active Directory for Windows 2003
• Office 2002, including PowerPoint for Windows XP

Installing Rational DOORS v9.2

If you already have Rational DOORS, the version that you have (i.e. whether it is patched or unpatched) does not affect the way in which Rational DOORS v9.2 is installed. In all cases, Rational DOORS v9.2 is installed into a new directory named Program Files\IBM\Rational\DOORS\9.2 by default. After successful installation, if your current version of Rational DOORS is version 9.0 or higher, it is removed from your system. If your current version is prior to version 9.0, it remains on your system.

Note: When you install the Rational DOORS client in Japan, you must accept the default location.

You cannot install Rational DOORS v9.2 into the same directory as your current Rational DOORS installation. If you try to do this the installation will fail.

Obtaining a license for Rational DOORS

If this is your first installation of Rational DOORS, you must obtain a license from IBM. You also need to install version 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 or 2.0 of the Rational License Server TL.

For information about how to obtain a license from IBM, and how to install the Rational License Server TL, see its user documentation.

If you are already running Rational DOORS, the action you need to take depends on the version of Rational DOORS you are running, and whether you have a valid maintenance agreement:

• If you are running Rational DOORS v8.2 or v8.3, and you have a valid maintenance agreement, you do not need a new license to install and run Rational DOORS v9.2.



• If you are running Rational DOORS v8.2 or v8.3, and do not have a valid maintenance agreement, a message is displayed:
  
  The FEATURE name Rational DOORS with version 2009.0602 cannot be found.
  License server does not support this version of the feature
  
  If this message is displayed, you need to obtain a new license.



• If you are running a version of Rational DOORS earlier than v8.2, you need a new license to run Rational DOORS, and you also need to install version 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 or 2.0 of the Rational License Server TL.

What's new in version 9.2

• Telelogic rebranding
  
  Telelogic is now part of IBM, and the work is ongoing to rebrand Rational DOORS to bring it into the IBM Rational family. Much of the look and feel of Rational DOORS remains largely unchanged with most of the changes "behind the scenes".
  
  Rebranding is an incremental process and will continue in future releases of Rational DOORS.
  
  
• Support for RIF standards
  
  Many companies need to be able to share requirements data with partners, some of which might even be using different requirements management tools. In response to this need, IBM Rational has begun the process of integrating support for Requirements Interchange Format (RIF) into Rational DOORS. RIF is the standardized format and data model defined via an XML schema by the HIS initiative.
  
  Rational DOORS v9.2 enables companies to simplify project collaboration with partners and ensure that they do not lose critical requirements information when exchanging data. The functionality provides the means to distribute development of requirements between suppliers. Suppliers can contribute whole documents that trace back to central requirements, sections of documents, or even attributes of specific requirements.
  
  This version of Rational DOORS includes the following new features:
  
  
  • Support for export and Import with XML data based on the RIF standard.
  • Data interchange of Rational DOORS data including modules, objects, links.
  • Support for construction of metadata including modules, types, attributes, views (this will not support changes to existing metadata but will construct new metadata where found).
  • Localized support for history
  • Support for the transfer of DXL Attributes as plain text.
  • Support for OLE objects.
  
  
  A patch to Rational DOORS v9.2 is planned for the third quarter of 2009 to extend coverage of RIF. Expected functions include:
  
  
  • Disperse module selection - Supports modules selected from any folder within the related project.
  • Baseline support, import a baseline into a new module.
  • Distributed data control:
    
    
    • Delegation of requirements activities.
    • Partners can modify defined attributes within a module.
    • Partners can modify defined object hierarchies within a module.
    • Partners can manipulate links.
    • Partners can modify defined attributes within a module.
    • Merge data back into the original module locations.
    
    
  • Support for the transfer of Layout DXL and traceability columns as plain text.
    
    
  Known limitations for RIF due to outstanding patch (above)
  
  
  • Definitions of RIF packages limited to modules from a single folder location
  • Support for layout DXL only through converting layout DXL to attribute DXL
  • Some of the following dialog components are disabled:
    
    
    • On the RIF Definitions tab on Project Properties, the Recover and Imports buttons
    • On the Edit RIF definition dialog, the Module version, Delegated data control mode, and Delegated data control view fields
    • On the Import RIF package dialog, the Use existing RIF Definition check box, and the RIF Definition Name, RIF Definition Description and RIF Import Package Description fields
      
      


• Two-factor authentication and PKI
  
  The demand for security within businesses has been increasing, and in response Rational DOORS has now been extended to support two-factor authentication. Rational DOORS now provides support for multiple levels of authentication before you are able to gain access to your Rational DOORS data.
  
  Two-factor authentication comes in two forms:
  
  
  • A user logging into Rational DOORS must also have logged into their local operating system using a predefined account. We store the local user name as part of the Rational DOORS credential.
  
  
  
  • A user needing greater security (for example, when logging in remotely using a digi pass) must also provide further authentication using facilities through a Radius server.


Two-factor authentication uses facilities from the Rational Directory Server.

This implementation of two-factor authentication also satisfies the requirements for an environment supporting Public Key Infrastructures (PKI).


• Licensing
  
  IBM announces that the license policy for Rational DOORS has changed.
  
  Each instance of Rational DOORS running on a single machine will now consume its own Rational DOORS license.
  
  
• Japanese translated version of Rational DOORS
  
  Enterprises must coordinate globally distributed project teams in order to achieve the goals of their development strategy. Many companies have experienced a high degree of project failure due to communication and interpretation issues. Global projects require local language support to enable geographically dispersed development teams to work more efficiently.
  
  To respond to the increased needs of the Japanese business and IT community for localized versions of Rational DOORS and Rational DOORS Web Access, IBM Rational has expanded its offerings to deliver a comprehensive package of requirements management tools translated into the Japanese language.
  
  
• Rational DOORS for Rational Quality Manager Interface
  
  Rational DOORS v9.2 will be integrated with other Rational products to provide full lifecycle traceability in a collaborative and secure environment. This is the first step towards the integration of Rational DOORS with the Jazz Technology Platform. This initial release includes the integration of Rational DOORS with Rational Quality Manager. An integration with Rational Requirements Composer is expected to be available in September 2009.
  
  There are a number of definitions of how to measure quality, one of them being "quality is a measure of conformance to requirements". The integration of Rational DOORS and Rational Quality Manager enables teams to link requirements with test cases in order to measure the performance of the software/system against the business criticality of the requirements rather than the metrics of test results. Rational DOORS and Rational Quality Manager can help project teams to improve the overall quality of requirements and reduce rework through accurate requirements capture, full lifecycle communication and full test coverage. Project managers can improve time-to-deployment by discovering defects early in the test-cycle and predict more accurately when an application or system is of sufficient quality to release.
  
  As a role-based integration, the functionality focuses on providing the user with data and facilities inside their preferred environment. A test engineer using Rational Quality Manager has full access to Rational DOORS requirements to review and test against. Business analysts using Rational DOORS are able to monitor test progress against a defined set of requirements. Quality measures can now be taken from the requirements being tested by ensuring tests are being developed against the known requirements, and then ensuring that the tests have been successfully executed.
  
  Rational Quality Manager and Rational Composer are based on the Jazz Technology Platform. For more information about the Jazz Technology Platform, please visit the Jazz website.
  
  
• Installers
  
  The Rational DOORS client installer has been amended to allow users to choose whether to install just the Rational DOORS client, or to install the Rational DOORS client along with the Rational DOORS for Rational Quality Manager Interface client and/or server.
  
  The Rational DOORS database server installer has also been amended. You can now choose whether to install just the Rational DOORS database server, or to install the Rational DOORS database server along with the Rational DOORS server interface services, which allow Rational DOORS to interface with selected future integrations.
  
  
• Share and distribute information using direct HTTP URL to modules or objects
  
  As the volume of requirements increases, it is important to be able to identify and communicate specific requirements to team members. Using Web based technology there is an expectation that the standard technology of URLs will be used.
  
  The release of Rational DOORS v9.2 and Rational DOORS Web Access v1.2 gives project teams the ability to distribute information using direct HTTP URL access to Rational DOORS information. Team members can access Rational DOORS requirements directly by selecting a URL and choosing between using Rational DOORS or Rational DOORS Web Access. No local software is needed for new stakeholders to gain access to requirements.

About Rational DOORS v9.2 patches

When the patch is installed, if you subsequently use the master CD to install another Rational product, the integrations that enable the transfer of information between Rational DOORS and that product are not automatically installed. If you want to use an integration with another Rational product you must install the integration manually. You can either install the integration individually from the CD, or DVD, or you can download it from the IBM Web site.

Supported releases

You can apply this patch to Rational DOORS v9.2 or version 9.1 or 9.0. You can also install this patch on a machine where Rational DOORS has not previously been installed.

Defects fixed by patch version 9.2.0.1

RIF defects

Rational DOORS v9.2.0.1 fixes the defects that affected the implementation of RIF in Rational DOORS v9.2.0.0:

• Definitions of RIF packages are no longer limited to modules from a single folder location
• Layout DXL is transferred as read-only text
• Baselines are now supported
• Greater control of exported data is now available:
• Requirements activities can now be delegated
• Partners can now modify defined attributes within a module
• Partners can now modify defined object hierarchies within a module
• Partners can now manipulate links
• Partners can now modify defined attributes within a module
• Data can now be merged back into the original module locations


• The following dialog components are no longer disabled:
• On the RIF Definitions tab on Project Properties, the Recover and Imports buttons
• On the Edit RIF definition dialog has been redesigned

You can now use the Rational DOORS server interface services to interface with Rational Requirements Composer. For information on installing the Rational DOORS server interface services, see the Rational DOORS Installation Guide, which is available on the IBM Rational Information Center.

To get the best out of the interface with Rational Requirements Composer, upgrade all your Rational DOORS clients to 9.2.0.2.

Installing patch version 9.2.0.2

Patch 9.2.0.2 is a client patch for Rational DOORS v9.2 on Windows and a server patch for Rational DOORS v9.2 on all platforms.
This patch can be applied if you have previously installed version 9.0 or 9.1, or if you have not installed Rational DOORS on your computer before.

Installing the client patch

To install this patch:

1. Download and run the executable file on your Rational DOORS client machine(s).
   The Welcome screen is displayed.
2. Click Next.
   The License Agreement screen is displayed.
3. Select "I accept", and then click Next.
   The Ready to Install the Program screen is displayed.
4. Click Install.
   A progress bar is displayed. When all the files are installed the Finish screen is displayed.
5. Click Finish.

Installing the server patch

To install the Rational DOORS server patch, follow the instructions in the appropriate section of the Rational DOORS Installation Guide.

Limitations

Spelling checker

There may be some languages supplied with the spelling checker, for example Russian that do not supply alternative text when errors are detected during a spelling check.

When you set up the options for checking spelling in certain languages, a Modes panel is displayed on the Options dialog box. In some languages the modes that are available are meaningless. For example, if the selected language is Russian, the modes Je and Jo are displayed.

These issues are a result of limitations in the third party software used by Rational DOORS to provide spelling checker capabilities.

Hidden text

Rational DOORS does not support hidden text. For example, if you copy text including hidden text from Microsoft Word and paste it into a Rational DOORS module, the text that is displayed in the module explorer is different to that displayed in the object.
